Baby on the way?

Insure your baby before birth

Basic health insurance

For basic health insurance you have three months after the birth. If you register in time, cover applies retroactively from birth (Art. 3 para. 1 and Art. 5 para. 1 KVG). Every insurer must accept your child, without health questions.

Supplementary insurance separately

Supplementary insurance is different (e.g. semi-private hospital ward, orthodontics): under the Insurance Contract Act the insurer may ask health questions, add reservations or reject the application. So apply before the birth, while there is no diagnosis yet. You take out supplementary insurance separately, even with a different insurer from your basic health insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a sibling discount in basic health insurance?

With some insurers, yes. The FOPH lists it as an age subgroup in the tariff: “from the 3rd child” (subgroup K3) applies to the third and every further child, “3 or more children” (K5, Groupe Mutuel) to every child as soon as three children are insured with the insurer. The calculator includes exactly these levels. In the 2026 FOPH data, all published sibling levels start with the third child.

When do I have to register my baby with a health insurer?

No later than three months after the birth. If you register in time, cover starts at birth, even retroactively (Art. 3 para. 1 and Art. 5 para. 1 KVG). The premium is calculated to the day from birth (FOPH).

Why should I take out supplementary insurance before the birth?

Because there is no obligation to accept applicants for supplementary insurance: the insurer may ask health questions, add reservations or refuse (FOPH, requirement to take out insurance). Before the birth there is no diagnosis that could stand in the way.

Which deductibles are possible for children?

Children have no standard deductible (CHF 0, Art. 64 para. 4 KVG). You can choose CHF 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 (Art. 93 para. 1 KVV). The retention fee is at most CHF 350 a year (Art. 103 para. 2 KVV).

Do several children with the same insurer pay less co-payment?

Yes. With a CHF 0 deductible, all children of a family with the same insurer together pay at most as much as one adult: CHF 300 deductible and CHF 700 retention fee (Art. 64 para. 4 KVG, Art. 103 KVV). With an optional deductible, at most twice the maximum amount per child (Art. 93 para. 3 KVV).

Do all children have to be with the same insurer?

No. Everyone is insured individually, children too (FOPH). Sibling discounts and the joint cap on co-payment only apply to children with the same insurer, though.

When does my child start paying the young adult premium?

From 1 January after the year in which they turn 18. Age groups are based on the year of birth (Art. 61 para. 3 KVG, Art. 91 para. 3 KVV).
