Frequently asked questions
In which canton are health insurance premiums highest in 2027?
In the standard model for adults (CHF 300 deductible, with accident cover), the average of all insurers in 2027 is highest in Geneva (CHF 778.35), Ticino (CHF 748.50), Basel-City (CHF 745.76). The Swiss average is CHF 606.62 per month.
In which canton are health insurance premiums lowest?
The 2027 average is lowest in Zug (CHF 447.70), Appenzell Inner Rhodes (CHF 479.03), Nidwalden (CHF 517.57). With an alternative model and a higher deductible you pay considerably less in every canton; the map shows the cheapest premium per canton with the indicator “Cheapest premium”.
What is a premium region?
Cantons with large cost differences may be divided into up to three premium regions (FDHA Ordinance on Premium Regions, SR 832.106). In 2027 this applies to 11 cantons: Basel-Country, Bern, Fribourg, Graubünden, Lucerne, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Ticino, Valais, Vaud, Zurich. All municipalities in a region pay the same premium with the same insurer; that is why the municipality level of the map shows the values of the region.
Why does the atlas not show the FOPH “average premium”?
The FOPH average premium is weighted by the number of insured people and covers all age groups, deductibles and models (2027: CHF 412.00 per month according to the FOPH, press release of 29.09.2026). The atlas calculates its own figures from the approved premiums of all insurers, without weighting, for a fixed reference person. That makes cantons, regions and years directly comparable.
May I use the figures from the atlas?
Yes. Under “Open data” all averages and minimums are available as CSV, with licence and suggested citation. The underlying data comes from the FOPH (opendata.swiss), the base map from swisstopo.
