How the benefit finder calculates
The basis is the insurance conditions (general and supplementary conditions, benefit overviews) of the recorded products. Every value has a reference with document and page.
- Normalise: we convert amounts to the reference unit of the benefit, for example CHF 450 per 3 years to CHF 150 per year. «Unlimited» counts as full cover.
- Coverage score per benefit from 0 to 100: normalised value divided by a reference value, capped at 100. The reference is the 90th percentile of all recorded products (at least 5 values), otherwise a defined need. Hospital ward and yes/no benefits have fixed rank values.
- Unknown stays unknown: values that are not clearly regulated in the conditions or not recorded give no points and never count as covered.
- Combinations: for each benefit, the better value of the two products counts; amounts are not added up. A combination only appears if each product covers at least one benefit better than the other and together they cover more than any single product of the fund. Never two variants of the same product, never two hospital insurance products.
- Order: coverage score, then number of covered benefits, then the higher documented amount (CHF 800 before CHF 500, even if both have 100 points), then the documented reimbursement rate, then fewer products, then alphabetical. Never by remuneration, never by premium.
- We group equivalent products of the same fund and list them under «Same benefit also in».
The coverage score is an aid for comparison, not a rating of the whole product. The insurer’s conditions always prevail. The detailed methodology is under Methodology.
Frequently asked questions about the benefit finder
Which supplementary insurance pays the most for fitness?
It depends on the annual limit and the reimbursement rate. Choose «Fitness and exercise» above: the ranking shows for each recorded product the amount per year, the percentage and the reference in the conditions. For the same amount, the product with the higher documented reimbursement rate comes first.
Do two supplementary insurance products pay twice for the same benefit?
Not automatically. The insurance conditions decide: some products explicitly pay on top of another product of the same fund, others only once. The benefit finder therefore always counts only the better value and shows both references.
Why does the benefit finder suggest two products?
When you choose several benefits, often no single product covers all of them well, for example an outpatient product for glasses and a prevention product for fitness. A combination only appears if both products contribute something and together cover more than any single product.
Can I have supplementary insurance with two different health insurance funds?
Yes. Supplementary insurance products are private contracts under the Insurance Contract Act (ICA), separate from basic health insurance. Two funds do mean two contracts, two invoices and a health check with each. Some products require basic health insurance with the same insurer.
Why does the benefit finder not show premiums?
For supplementary insurance there are no officially published premiums like the FOPH premiums for basic health insurance. The premium depends on age, region and the health check. We do not invent figures; you can get a concrete quote via «Request a switch».
Where do the benefit details come from?
Directly from the general and supplementary insurance conditions of each insurer. For every value we store the quote with document, page and clause; one click on the reference opens the page in the PDF. So you can see for yourself what applies instead of having to trust a sales promise. The insurer’s conditions always prevail.
