    Cancel basic health insurance for 30.06.

    Only with the standard deductible in the standard model: your notice must reach the insurer by 31.03.; the switch takes effect on 01.07.

  • Every insurer must accept you for basic health insurance in its area of activity, without health questions. (Art. 5 let. i KVAG)
  • If you have not paid premiums or co-payments and debt enforcement proceedings were started against you, you can only switch insurer once everything has been paid. (Art. 64a para. 6 KVG)
  • Your old basic health insurance only ends once the new insurer has told it that you are insured without interruption. So you are never without insurance. (Art. 7 para. 5 KVG)
  • Switching basic health insurance does not affect your supplementary insurance. Your old insurer may not cancel it for that reason; it continues until you cancel it yourself. (Art. 7 paras. 7 and 8 KVG)

  1. 30.09.

    Supplementary insurance (Insurance Contract Act)

    Often the notice deadline for supplementary insurance for the end of the year, but only if the general terms and conditions of your product say so. Check your policy.

    Basic health insurance at the end of the year

    Notice of cancellation of basic health insurance must reach the insurer by 30.11.; the postmark does not count. Applies to all deductibles and models; the switch takes effect on 01.01.

    Basic health insurance for 30.06.

    Only with the standard deductible (CHF 300, children CHF 0) in the standard model: notice must reach the insurer by 31.03., the switch takes effect on 01.07. With an optional deductible or an alternative model, you can only switch at the end of the year.

Frequently asked questions

Does the postmark count?

No. What counts is receipt by the insurer (Art. 7 para. 2 KVG). If 30.11. falls on a Saturday or Sunday, according to the FOPH fact sheet the letter must arrive by the Friday before. So send your notice by registered mail or A-Post Plus, according to the FOPH by 15.11.

By when can I change my deductible?

You report a higher deductible for 01.01. by 31.12., a lower one by 30.11. (Art. 94 paras. 1 and 2 KVV; Art. 7 para. 2 KVG). If you only change your deductible, you stay with your insurer.

When can I change my insurance model?

From the standard model to an alternative model (GP, HMO, telemedicine) with your insurer at any time; from an alternative model back or to another only at the end of the year, with notice by 30.11. (Art. 100 para. 2 KVV; Art. 7 para. 2 KVG).

Who can switch on 30.06.?

Only people insured in the standard model with the standard deductible, i.e. CHF 300 for adults and CHF 0 for children. Notice must arrive by 31.03. (Art. 7 para. 1 KVG; Art. 94 para. 2 and Art. 100 para. 3 KVV).

Does 30.09. also apply to basic health insurance?

No. For many supplementary insurance products, 30.09. is the notice deadline for the end of the year, but only if the general terms and conditions of your product say so; supplementary insurance is governed by the Insurance Contract Act. For basic health insurance the deadline is 30.11. (Art. 7 para. 2 KVG).
